Using an Arris Surfboard sb8200 with pfsense

I wanted to share my experience setting up my home server with pfsense and an Arris Surfboard sb8200 modem. 🏠🔧

At first, I ran into an issue where pfsense wasn’t getting an IP from WAN, despite my home router getting one fairly quickly. 🤔

After some trial and error, I discovered an important step in the process: I needed to boot up the Arris modem WITHOUT it being plugged into Ethernet (just power and coax connection), wait about 10 minutes (although it could be less), and then plug it into the pfsense WAN port. ✨

Once I did this, the WAN port picked up an IP address quickly (within a minute). 🙌🏼
